US Rail Service Embargo on Export Containers

Due to heavy congestion and labor issues with PMA/ ILWU, the west coast ports¡¯ situation still has not been improved much.

What is more, Union Pacific (UP), Pacific Northwest (PNW), Burlington Northern Sante Fe (BNSF) railroad service companies

have embargoed their rail service to West Coast Ports; Seattle, Tacoma, and Portland for export cargoes.

Other terminal/gate services have stopped as requested from those railroad companies as well (Please see the attachment for detail).

Embargo has no impacts on Import cargoes yet; however additional delays are expected.

The embargoes lead many cargoes turned around their routes to other routes such as East ports or Canada Ports.

However, it seems that they cannot be magic solutions since they are facing congestion as well.

For export shipments, it is hard to book with the carriers unless you have established existing business.

Vessel routings are constantly changing due to embargos and rates, transit time, space availability are also continuously fluctuating with the current situation.

It is extremely difficult to advise which will be the most desirable solution could be, since all major US and Canada ports are suffering from similar situations.

We will keep you updated for more information.
